According to an article in the Montreal Gazette, large quantities of antidepressants have been found in the liver, muscle and brain tissues of brook trout exposed for just three months to the supposedly ‘treated’ effluent from Montreal’s sewage treatment plant. Apparently, most sewage treatment plants, including those in the U.S., are not designed to remove drugs and other pharmaceuticals from raw sewage. While the ‘treated’ water is deemed ‘safe’ to be dumped back into the environment and water systems, it carries remarkably high amounts of both prescription and ‘recreational’ drugs in it.
Now, that is just downright depressing. I guess when I am reincarnated for my next go around, I should hope to come back as a trout living below the treatment plant.
